Kyoto 京都Probably best known to Canadians as the birthplace of the Kyoto Accord, Kyoto is one of the largest cities in modern day Japan. However, it is the historical imperial capital of Japan (Kyoto literally means "capital city") and holds a wealth of cultural treasures to explore. The city is filled with over 2000 temples and shrines. Many of these are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, providing a glimps into the rich history of Japan. Some of the most famous include the Golden Temple, the Silver Temple and Kiyomizu.
Another popular attraction in Kyoto is the historical district of Gion, where one can catch a glimps of a geisha or a maiko floating down lantern lit, cobblestoned streets. |
