Miyajima 宮島Located a short ferry ride away from the city of Hiroshima, Miyajima boasts one of the most well known and iconic images of Japan, the giant red torii gate that seem to be floating on the sea. These gates are considered to be one of the top 3 sites in all of Japan (日本三景). The famous gates are complimented by the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Itsukushima Shrine. These sites which are believed to have stood since the 1500's, when the enitre island was considered sacred and access granted only to pilgrims. The island is also reknowned for its natural beauty as well as its friend deer and monkeys that roam the island.
